Corkscrew

WAGBAG, a rebellious trio hailing from the punk havens of Pasadena, California, is a force to be reckoned with in the progressive/punk scene. Their self-titled debut album, a sonic journey comprising nine tracks, introduces a fusion of punk, progressive, and ska elements, featuring robust rhythmic guitars and straightforward bass and drum foundations; mixed by Las Lunas Records. WAGBAG’s musical concoction is a rarity, standing out with its unique blend that defies traditional genre boundaries.

The album kicks off with a raw, unapologetic attitude, echoed in the lyrics of their lead singer. In “I should Quit,” the vocalist dismisses vocal training suggestions, opting to embrace a gritty, unpolished style. The rebellious spirit is intensified by cryptic lyrics that resonate with themes of life, death, and self-discovery. The track’s chaotic chorus, punctuated by reverberating “YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH,” adds a layer of raw energy, setting the tone for the album.

“Butyraceous” introduces a different facet of WAGBAG’s sound, showcasing their ability to seamlessly weave through genres. The song’s lyrics invite to explore the intricate layers of the band’s sonic landscape, with phrases like “cerebral lines” and a demand to “look at yourself.” The chaos is momentarily halted with a bold declaration, “YEAHHH! LIKE BUTTER, WOULDN’T, EVER, MELT,” revealing the band’s knack for unpredictable twists.

TLOU” ventures into darker territories, combining love and morbidity. The infectious chorus, urging to “think before you bite me” and “think before you fuck me,” suggests a thematic exploration of desire and consequence. WAGBAG’s fearless lyrics and unconventional approach paint a vivid picture of a band unafraid to push boundaries.

The band leaves a lasting impression. The enigmatic title coupled with the unapologetic delivery signifies the band’s commitment to breaking stereotypes and embracing individuality.

With a distinctive sound, rebellious lyrics, and a refusal to conform, WAGBAG emerges as a breath of fresh air in the Pasadena punk scene, promising listeners an experience unlike any other.
