Berlin’s latest punk trio, Personality, just dropped their debut single “Gangrene,” and it’s everything you’d expect from a band blending 70s post-punk grit with the attitude of 90s skate punk and a dash of garage rock revival. Made up of a Brit, a Chilean, and a Dutch, the trio packs a raw, driving sound that hits like a freight train, and “Gangrene” is the perfect introduction to their chaotic, unpolished energy.

Lyrically, the song explores the sinking feeling of a doomed relationship, wrapped in a nautical metaphor. The imagery of “sinking in the ocean” and “trying to find the sun” captures the hopelessness of clinging to something that’s long gone, while lines like “When I say sailor, you say pirate, let’s be honest, it’s the fucking same” play with the blurry line between love and betrayal. There’s an underlying frustration, a sense of inevitability that comes through in every raw vocal and pounding riff.
Musically, “Gangrene” feels like a wild ride. The distorted guitars and relentless drumming create a sense of urgency, while the lo-fi production keeps it grounded, almost like you’re listening to it in some underground dive bar. There’s a touch of danger and a lot of defiance. It’s gritty, unrefined, and packed with the kind of energy that makes you want to shout along.
For a debut single, Personality has nailed the vibe. They’re not trying to be pretty; they’re here to give you something real, loud, and unapologetic. If this is a taste of what’s to come, we’re all in for a wild, raucous ride.
