Fairy Tale in a Modern Age is the new 6–track EP from Calgary, Canada skatepunk band Upside Down Man, released through Sketchy Records and produced by Casey Lewis (Belvedere’s drummer) and recorded at Echobase Studios. Right from the start, you can tell this is a well-crafted release made by people who know the genre inside out.
I was lucky enough to get a vinyl copy, and it looks amazing — that color is somewhere between papaya and melon, with a really clean finish. Sound-wise, it delivers exactly what you want from a good pressing: clear, punchy, and detailed. Every element stands out — solid guitar riffs, fast drums and bass (just how I like them), and a well-executed vocal performance that fits the skatepunk vibe perfectly.
The EP doesn’t have any filler tracks. Each song feels intentional and well put together. One of my personal favorites is “In the Way,” which centers around setting boundaries and breaking free from a toxic influence — relatable and straight to the point. That said, “Now Or Never” is a serious standout too… those guitar solos and drum riffs are the kind that really give you chills.
It’s also worth mentioning that Upside Down Man were part of the Good Shit Awards 2025, reaching the second round in the Best EP category — well deserved.
I’m usually not into rating releases, since every band deserves respect for the work and dedication they put in, but this one earns a solid 4.5 out of 5 from me.
If you’re into good, no-nonsense skatepunk, this is a strong recommendation and definitely one of the better releases to check out in 2025.
