NOFX: 40 Years of Fuckin’ Up — Punk Rock, fun, and Unfiltered Honesty
Hay películas hechas para el público en general y hay películas hechas para una tribu. 40 Years of Fuckin’ Up pertenece completamente a la segunda categoría. Nos fuimos a verla en la Ciudad de las Artes, en Panamá, y desde el primer minuto queda claro que esto no es un documental para cualquiera: es una carta de amor, autodestrucción y supervivencia dirigida directamente a quienes crecieron con NOFX sonando a todo volumen.
There are films made for the general public, and there are films made for a tribe. 40 Years of Fuckin’ Up belongs entirely to the latter. We attended a special screening at Ciudad de las Artes in Panama City, and from the very first minute it becomes clear that this is not a documentary for everyone. It is a love letter filled with self-destruction, survival, and nostalgia, aimed directly at those who grew up with NOFX blasting through their speakers.
La película no intenta maquillar nada. Habla sin censura sobre la infancia de algunos de sus integrantes, los traumas que los marcaron, las adicciones, los excesos, los fetiches y todas esas decisiones cuestionables que terminaron convirtiéndose en parte de la leyenda de la banda. Hay sangre, sexo, drogas y momentos incómodos que reflejan exactamente lo que siempre fue NOFX: una banda incapaz de fingir ser algo que no es.
The film refuses to sanitize its story. It openly explores the childhoods of its members, the traumas that shaped them, their addictions, excesses, fetishes, and all the questionable decisions that eventually became part of the band’s mythology. There is blood, sex, drugs, and plenty of uncomfortable moments that perfectly capture what NOFX has always been: a band incapable of pretending to be something it is not.
Más allá de las anécdotas salvajes, lo que realmente golpea es la humanidad detrás del desastre. En varios momentos resulta imposible no sentirse identificado con las inseguridades, los errores, las pérdidas y la búsqueda constante de un lugar en el mundo. Entre risas, confesiones y golpes emocionales, la película te lleva de regreso a la época dorada del punk rock de los 90, cuando todo parecía más simple, más peligroso y mucho más auténtico.
Beyond the outrageous stories, what truly resonates is the humanity beneath the chaos. At several points, it becomes impossible not to relate to the insecurities, mistakes, losses, and the endless search for belonging. Through laughter, confessions, and emotional gut punches, the documentary transports viewers back to the golden era of 1990s punk rock, when everything felt simpler, riskier, and far more authentic.

Despite running for more than two hours, the film never drags. As a NOFX fan, every minute feels earned. This is more than a retrospective of the band’s history; it is an emotional trip that reveals how four deeply flawed individuals managed to build one of the most important and influential punk rock bands of all time.
La experiencia fue aún mejor gracias a la presencia de El Hefe, quien compartió un espacio de firmas y fotografías con los asistentes. Lejos de cualquier actitud de estrella de rock, se mostró accesible, relajado y genuino, conversando con los fans como si fuera uno más del grupo. Al finalizar la proyección, también participó en una sesión de preguntas y respuestas que aportó aún más contexto y cercanía a una historia que ya de por sí se siente muy personal.
The experience was elevated even further by the presence of El Hefe, who spent time signing autographs and taking photos with attendees. Far removed from any rock-star attitude, he came across as approachable, relaxed, and genuinely appreciative of the fans. Following the screening, he also participated in a Q&A session that added even more context and intimacy to a story that already feels remarkably personal.

Si NOFX formó parte de tu vida en algún momento, esta película no solo vale la pena: es una experiencia que te recuerda por qué el punk rock nunca fue solo música. Fue una forma de vivir.
40 Years of Fuckin’ Up is undoubtedly one of the finest punk rock films released in recent years. Raw, hilarious, uncomfortable, emotional, and completely honest. If NOFX was ever part of your life, this film is more than worth watching—it is a powerful reminder that punk rock was never just music. It was a way of life.
