SK8T GANG

Cleveland, Ohio’s skate rock outfit VIOLET RAY is back with their second full-length album, “Sk8t Gang,” released October 31 through Otitis Media Records. And if you’re expecting a record that politely sticks to one sound, think again. These ten tracks deliver a hard-hitting mix of punk rock, skate punk, funk, and metal influences, all wrapped up in a raw, energetic attitude that feels right at home on the streets.

“Sk8t Gang” doesn’t waste time getting to the point. The sound is loud, tight, and unapologetic, with plenty of attitude behind every riff. Tracks like “Skate Rat” and “Break Your Face” lean into heavier, metal-influenced territory, adding some serious punch to the album. Then there’s “Ripper Girl,” which brings feminism into the mix, proving that VIOLET RAY aren’t just here to make noise; they’ve also got something to say.

The lyrics are deeply connected to skate culture, its characters, its spots, and the attitude that comes with it. “Birdman” pays tribute to Tony Hawk, celebrating the legendary skater’s influence, dedication, and the idea that skating is about the journey, not fame or competition. Meanwhile, the title track, “Sk8t Gang,” captures the rebellious spirit of skate crews, facing hostility from outsiders and refusing to back down. It’s an exaggerated, tongue-in-cheek take on skatepark rivalries, packed with the kind of attitude that has always been part of skateboarding’s DNA.

“Skate Rat” takes things straight to Cleveland, name-dropping legendary local skate spots and celebrating the city’s skateboarding history. It’s a tribute to the places, the risks, and the people who helped shape the scene. You can almost picture the broken boards, busted ankles, and countless attempts to land that trick.

The result is a solid, ten-track ride with a strong skate-rock spirit and enough variety to keep things interesting from beginning to end.

VIOLET RAY clearly know where they come from and what they want to represent. “Sk8t Gang” is loud and occasionally playful, and built around the kind of attitude that doesn’t need anyone’s approval.
